Sydney’s Will Baker has just released his newest single, ‘Racing Car.’ A velvety smooth indie-pop tune, ‘Racing Car’ was written as a track to mirror the storyline of one of Taylor Swift’s most iconic hits, taking a playful stance with its narrator on the opposing side of Swift’s dilemma:
“This song was inspired by Taylor Swift's ‘We Are Never Getting Back Together’ but written from the other perspective. The tongue in cheek feeling of the lyricism accompanied by interesting production give the song an overall bright vibe. The use of [the] metaphor ‘Racing Car’ describes someone who is stuck in your head; speeding through your thoughts, leaving you dazed and longing for more.” WILL BAKER
The track, which was produced and mixed by Luke Bertozat YAP-YAP Studios (Lime Cordiale, DMA's, Bluejuice), then mastered by Ben Feggans (Sampa the Great, Vera Blue and RÜFÜS DU SOL), exhibits not only Baker’s captivating pop-songwriting abilities, but also his inimitably warm and inviting vocal talents. Reminiscent of many pop and soul heavyweights of the early 2000s, Will Baker’s voice lends a sense of almost vintage charm to his craft, emphasising the pull of his lyrics by tenfold.
Delightfully relevant to the thematic nature of the song itself, the process of writing and shaping ‘Racing Car’ was a smooth and speedy one, the track dashing back and forth between Baker and his collaborators on the project until its graceful arrival at the finish line:
“The song writing process was super easy for this one. We kinda came up with the music quite quickly and we saw the direction we wanted to take the track pretty early. We wrote it over a couple weeks going back and forth with different ideas. This was always the track we would come back to after working on the other tracks because it felt so easy.” WILL BAKER
With his 2023 EP Time Machine having amassed 105K+ streams on Spotify, Baker averages over 3.4K monthly listeners on the platform, and has a following of over 8K across Instagram and Tiktok alone. Having previously supported the likes of MYMA and Charli Lucas, Baker is soon set to share the stage with Joel Leggett on the Sydney leg of his national tour.
Will has also just announced an upcoming free intimate & acoustic show at Queensland’s Mount Cotton Hall. You can catch him there on April 5th, as well as at Leggett’s show at Low 302 on March 23rd, to hear the new track performed live:
