Eora/Sydney indie 5-piece SLIM JIMZ have today released their latest single ‘R.I.P.’, along with the announcement of their forthcoming sophomore EP ‘Don’t Keep Quiet’, set for release later this month on the 29th of May.
SLIM JIMZ have been making some significant waves over the past few years, with infectious surf-rock singles and a dynamic live show that has earned the band a fast-growing fan base across the country. On ‘R.I.P.’ the band subvert all expectations, leaning on the heavier side and experimenting with their own sonic identity.
The hypnotic opening riff draws the ear in immediately, adorned with snappy, reverb-soaked guitars that build to an immense crescendo in the lead up to the chorus. Frontman Ben Roache’s vocal performance is on full blast here - commanding the chorus with confidence and passion.
Thematically the song takes an uplifting route, empowering the listener to take control of their own narrative and become the person they truly want to be.
“This song is about getting to know yourself better and understanding who you really are as a person. It’s about saying goodbye to the idea of who you thought you once were and accepting and embracing who you really are. I have always loved music but never thought I would be able to play in front of an audience. Recently I have started embracing music as my career and I have never felt happier or motivated in my life.”
BEN ROACH, SLIM JIMZ
As expected, when the track was in its early writing stages there was an initial hesitation from the band, hoping that this heavier sound could still fit into the SLIM JIMZ stylistic palette.
Once every member had added their flavour to the track, the band found their footing and embraced the new, giving the track their all during the recording process with producer Jack Nigro (DMA’s, Pacific Avenue, Skeggs, The Terrys) at the Grove Studios.
“One of our guitarists literally cannot stop strumming at practice and one of his 10,000 ideas was the opening riff of RIP. Our drummer quickly locked in with a tight beat and we all started bouncing our heads to this heavier sound, looking around at each other thinking “should we? Is this really Slim Jimz?”
Once our other guitarist added a cinematic layer to the intro of the song, it was game over and we decided to lean in. Our producer was so psyched on this sound that he cranked the distortion on the bass and rounded us up in the studio together, getting us all to yell “R.I.P” as crowd shouts. R.I.P. hits with more force than our other tracks. We want people to feel charged from it and be confident in who they are.“

SLIM JIMZ are moving towards the release with some great momentum, with support from every corner of the industry over the last few years.
The band have lit up stages across the country with the likes of South Summit, Rum Jungle, The Vanns and Masaya (NZ), and have had significant airplay from triple j and triple J Unearthed, as well as community stations such as 2SER, SYN and 4ZZZ. The bands upcoming EP ‘Don’t Keep Quiet’ is a celebration of how far the band has come since their inception, cementing themselves as a mainstay in the local indie scene.
