Melbourne indie band Seaweed On Sticks have just released a brand new single titled ‘Cruel Animal’; a stirring, synth-lined pop track, tinged with just a hint of both rock and electronic sensibilities.
Touching on what it means to redeem oneself from one’s past actions, ‘Cruel Animal’ speaks to the experience of striving for a brighter future rather than wallowing in those mistakes; never trying to become a better person. On the thematic and lyrical content of the song, the band have said:
“‘Cruel Animal’ is a raw, introspective story about transformation and redemption. It delves into the journey of someone who once lived as a ‘monster’—a reflection of their past mistakes—but is now striving to lead a better, more meaningful life. With its dramatic tone, the song explores the universal truth that we all carry parts of ourselves we’d rather leave behind. It’s a heartfelt reminder that growth begins with acknowledging those mistakes and finding the strength to move forward.” SEAWEED ON STICKS
On the way the song itself came to be, the band expressed that the beginnings of the endeavour came naturally to them, rounded out by a smooth and instinctive writing process. It quickly fell into a system where each band member was able to contribute parts of themself and their expertise to the final product, ensuring a sentiment of collaborative effort was at the forefront of the task;
“The process behind ‘Cruel Animal’ started the way most of our songs do—with a simple melody on an acoustic guitar. From there, we spent time deciding how we wanted the song to feel, using the drums and bass to shape its energy and direction. Once the story and lyrics were written, each member of the band brought their own style and perspective to the track, adding layers that made it uniquely ours. This collaborative approach ensures every song reflects the creativity and individuality of everyone in the band.”
